New Jersey Lawmakers to Vote on 23-Cent Gas Tax Hike

New Jersey lawmakers face a decision on whether to approve Gov. Chris Christie's proposed 23-cent gas tax hike along with a cut in the sales tax from 7 percent to 6 percent.

The Democrat-led state Senate returns Thursday for a final voting session before the end of the fiscal year.

Waiting on their desks is a deal backed by Christie, a Republican, that calls for raising the gas tax to 37.5 cents a gallon from 14.5 cents, cutting the sales tax to 6 percent over nearly two years and cutting retirement income taxes. The Democrat-led Assembly approved the measure on Tuesday.

Sweeney had favored his own proposal raised the gas tax by the same amount but included other tax cuts.

The transportation trust fund runs dry on July 1.
