N.J. Governor Chris Christie makes his case for scrapping property tax rebates and other cuts at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will make his case for scrapping property tax rebates this year and cutting state aid to towns and schools by more than $1 billion in his first budget address to lawmakers.
Christie will outline his $29.3 billion budget proposal before a joint session of the Legislature at 1 p.m.
Legislative leaders say the Republican's budget also skips a $3 billion contribution to the state pension system. The system is underfunded by $46 billion.
Under Christie's budget, no one would get a property tax rebate this year. Senior citizens, the disabled and low-income wage earners will see checks at last year's levels next April.
The state constitution requires the new budget to be signed by July 1, the start of the new fiscal year.
