NJ Forest Fire Under Control; Arson Likely

New Jersey fire crews think Monday's rain will take care of any hot spots left from the weekend forest fire that scorched about 500 acres in Barnegat Township, Ocean County.

No property damage or injuries were reported.

Investigators say the fire probably started off of Cloverdale Rd. near Route 72 and was likely arson, although they haven't pinpointed the exact cause.

"Ninety-nine-plus percent of fires in New Jersey are started by people," Fire Warden Bert Plante told The Press of Atlantic City. "This was along a dirt road, o railroad, no lightning. You start narrowing it down. The question is, will we find an incendiary device?"

Plant says when fires are started on purpose, it's not always easy to catch the person who did it, but it's "not unheard of."
