Searching for Answers in Deaths of Cooper CEO, Wife Inside New Jersey Home

Nearly a month after the leader of a major Philadelphia-area health system and his wife were found dead inside their burning home, authorities in New Jersey have yet to reveal what led to their deaths.

Police and firefighters responded the home of former Cooper Health CEO John Sheridan and his wife Joyce at 6:15 a.m. on Sept. 28. Authorities said the fire was contained to the master bedroom, where firefighters found the unresponsive couple. Medics pronounced Sheridan, 72, dead at the scene. His 69-year-old wife died at a hospital a short time later.

In the weeks since the deaths, the Somerset County Prosecutors Office -- the lead investigators in the case -- have ruled out certain things but haven’t said exactly what happened inside their Sheridan’s bedroom.

Prosecutors ruled out the couple’s four sons as suspects in the deaths and they also ruled the fire was intentionally set but declared that they are not looking for a arsonist.

Recordings of the 911 call made by a neighbor revealed the caller heard "banging" from within the home but investigators said those noises were likely caused by the fire.

Prosecutors have continued to claim that pending lab results are needed to rule on official causes of death.

On Thursday, the prosecutors office wouldn't answer if a final cause of death has been determined.
