New Jersey Considers Building More Rest Stop Shopping Destinations

New Jersey is considering trying to make its toll-road rest stops into destinations.

A bill working through the Legislature would require the operators of the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway to study new revenue opportunities for rest stops.

The result could be more billboards, cellphone towers or even shops beyond the grab-and-go food and souvenirs there now. Another possibility is corporate sponsorships.

Lawmakers tell The Press of Atlantic City that the idea is to raise money for road repairs without charging the drivers.

The measure has passed in the Assembly but has not been considered yet by the full Senate.
