NJ May Get More Nuclear

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission wants a fourth plant in Salem County.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has set a public meeting May 6 to discuss plans by PSEG Nuclear to file an early site permit application, one of the first steps the utility would need to build a fourth reactor in Salem County.

The utility is moving ahead with preliminary work for a possible new plant, but has not yet decided whether to build the multi-billion dollar facility.

PSEG spokesman Joe Delmar says filing fore the permit is not a commitment to build. Rather, the application would recognize that the proposed site is suitable from an environmental and emergency planning standpoint.

PSEG Nuclear currently operates the Salem 1, Salem 2 and Hope Creek reactors in Lower Alloways Creek Township.
