Guardsman Headed to New Jersey Base Dies on New York Interstate

Connecticut National Guard officials have identified a soldier who was killed and another who was injured in a crash on Interstate 95 southbound in Rye, New York.

Officials say 43-year-old Staff Sgt. Ronald Patterson Jr. of Bridgeport died and 31-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Kayla Anne Downey of Shelton was injured when a National Guard truck and a car crashed at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The truck landed upside down on the highway shoulder.

The driver of the car also was injured.

Patterson and Downey were transporting training material to Fort Dix, New Jersey.

The National Guard said Patterson and Downey were members of the Guard's 192nd Engineer Battalion based in Stratford, Connecticut. Both soldiers served in Iraq and received awards and decorations.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
