NJ Tops National Graduation Rates

Eighty-seven percent of NJ high school seniors graduated

New Jersey’s high school graduation rate is the highest in the nation at 87 percent, according to a new data released by Diplomas Count, reports the Press of Atlantic City.

The Diplomas Count report, which was released Tuesday, is based on data from the 2007-08 academic school year, according to the Press of Atlantic City. Vermont has the second-highest graduation rate in the U.S. at 83 percent.

An estimated 14,000 of New Jersey’s high school seniors did not graduate in 2008, according to the report.

New Jersey Education Association spokesman, Steve Baker, told the Press of Atlantic City that the majority of New Jersey school are doing well.

“Other states want to do what we’re doing. We’re the only state trying to figure out how to undo what we’re doing,” Baker told the Press of Atlantic City.

Pennsylvania ranked 11th in the nation with a graduation rate of 78 percent, the Morning Sentinel reports.
