NJ Offers Grants Designed to Ease Risk of Flooding

New Jersey officials are offering $3 million in grants designed to reduce the risk of flooding along the Passaic River and its seven tributaries.

The Department of Environmental Protection said Thursday that 116 municipalities can now apply to fund projects like dredging shallow waterways or removing fallen trees.

Agency Commissioner Bob Martin says clearing debris will help keep water flowing during heavy rain.

Communities in the river basin saw severe flooding during Tropical Storms Irene and Lee in 2011.

Eligible towns and counties have until Nov. 30 to submit letters of interest. Each grant is expected to be in the range of $100,000.
