Man Defends Self With Shovel After Suspect Stabs Him Over Keys in NJ: Police

A man was forced to defend himself with a shovel after he was stabbed by another man in a domestic dispute in Newark early on Sunday, police said.

The 31-year-old victim arrived at an Osborne Terrace apartment where his two daughters lived with their mother and the suspect.

When the victim knocked on the door of the apartment at 2:45 a.m. to get car keys, 34-year-old Gary Austin stabbed him several times, police said.

The victim grabbed a shovel and was able to fend off Austin, who ran into the home and hid.

Police were able to locate Austin inside the apartment and arrested him on assault and weapons charges.

The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, has been hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

The exact relationship between the victim and Austin isn’t clear, nor is it clear what the victim was going to do with the car keys.

Police are investigating whether or not alcohol was a factor in the attack.
