NJ Detective Dies From Injuries After Car Crash

An Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office detective who was involved in a car crash earlier in January has died.

Special Operation Group Detective John Scott Stevens, 44, succumbed to his injuries Wednesday.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones, and pledge our continued support to his family during this most difficult time,” said Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato.

Stevens, of Forked River, New Jersey was on duty and driving a 2004 Honda Civic eastbound on Dover Road in Lacey Township on Jan. 8 at 10:53 a.m. when he somehow lost control of his vehicle. Stevens veered across the westbound lane, went off the road and crashed into a tree, officials said.

Stevens was flown to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he remained in critical condition until Wednesday, when he was pronounced dead at 3:32 a.m.

April would have marked Detective Stevens’ 15th year with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
