My Mother: She Has a Great Sense of Humor

We're celebrating Mother's Day this year by honoring our own moms here at NBC10. This story in our My Mother series is from NBC10 Reporter Denise Nakano, who loves the way her mom has always made her laugh.

I love my mom so much. She gives me courage, when I need strength. She listens to me when I need to talk, and talks to me when I need to listen. She also has a great sense of humor.

I only hope to be the type of mother my mother has been to me. Our bond is strong, made up of many great moments. But the one that makes me laugh every time is a funny moment shared inside a public restroom. I was nine years old.

This involves a little potty humor, so if that doesn't offend you, by all means read on!

My dad pulled over at a rest stop during a summer road trip. My mom and I went inside to use the restroom. We were in neighboring stalls, when suddenly, the loudest noise reverberated from the walls, echoed off the stalls and sounded like it came from King Kong. I yelled at the top of my lungs, "Mom!" Mortified, my mom yelled back, "That wasn't me!" In that moment, I realized the perpetrator was not my mom, but a lady I didn't realize was in the restroom with us. Fortunately, the stranger had a good sense of humor. The mix-up made her laugh so hard, I thought she was going to fall in. My mother and I emerged from the bathroom embarrassed. But as soon as we got a safe distance from the restroom, we laughed so hard together, we could barely catch our breath.

I'm glad for my mom's sense of humor, even in those moments when I embarrassed her more times than I can remember.
