Del. DMV Apologizes for Muslim Headscarf Photo Flap

The Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles has apologized to a Muslim teenager for an incident that occurred when she tried to have to her driver's license photo taken while wearing a religious headscarf or hijab, a Delaware transportation spokesman said.

An employee at the Georgetown DMV office was explaining scarves are allowed as long as the driver's face can be seen, DOT spokesman Mike Williams said. That prompted inappropriate comments from other customers and the Muslim teen left, Williams added.

The agency apologized to the teen and her family for the comments April 9 by other customers in their facility, according to Williams.

The Pennsylvania chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations issued a statement Tuesday thanking the Delaware DMV for “its ‘prompt and appropriate action’ in offering an apology to a Muslim driver in that state who was initially refused the right to take her driver’s license photograph wearing a religious head scarf.”
