Pa. Elderly Couple Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide

Bethel Police chief says, "it appears to be a mercy killing and a suicide"

Police say they believe the shooting deaths of an elderly couple in a Philadelphia-area home were a murder-suicide.

Officers in Delaware County were called to the Bethel Township home at about 3:40 p.m. Monday for what was originally reported to be carbon monoxide poisoning.

But Chief Thomas Worrilow says paramedics and township police officers found a 92-year-old woman and an 88-year-old man dead in the garage of gunshot wounds. He says one apparently shot the other and then committed suicide. Their names were not being released.

Worrilow said the two had been married for more than 60 years and had lived in the home for at least a half-century.

But he says both had health problems and “it appears to be a mercy killing and a suicide.”
