Mummers Parade in Center City

LATEST COVERAGE: Mummers strut along a new route for this year's parade upsetting some.

Philadelphia will begin the new year with the annual Mummers Parade in Center City.

The parade, which was shortened significantly due to cost, will start at 10 a.m. New Year's Day at City Hall with judging taking place at 15th Street and JFK Boulevard.

The parade will then go south on Broad Street from noon to 5 p.m. and end on Broad Street and Washington Avenue.

The overall participation in the parade has decreased from 12,000 to 8,000 mummers since 2001. For the first time in more than a century, the parade’s oldest troupe will not be strutting down the street.

Funding deficiencies forced the group to reconsider their regular route. The new route does not cross into South Philadelphia, where the mummers historically live and perform. Instead, the event will take over a one mile stretch of Broad Street south of City Hall.

During the parade, a family viewing area will be held at the Creative and Performing Arts School on 901 South Broad Street.

You can find more information on the Mummers Parade including the list of participants on the official Mummers website.
