Mother of Starved Baby Due in Court

The mother of a two-month-old baby who starved to death is due in court for arraignment on Wednesday.

Tanya Williams, 32, is charged with murder and related offenses. Her two-year-old son, Quasir Alexander, died of starvation and dehydration at the Traveler’s Aid shelter in West Philadelphia on Dec. 23.

Two caseworkers involved with the family at the shelter were suspended after his death.

Quasir’s twin brother was also suffering from malnutrition according to investigators. He and four other siblings are currently in the custody of the Philadelphia Department of Human Services.

Williams had nearly completed a 90-day program, funded by the city, to help with her parenting skills before her son’s death.

Investigators say that Quasir weighed less when he died than he did at birth. They also say that the infant had nothing in his belly.
