Off-Duty Officer Spots Gray Seal in New Jersey Creek

An off-duty New Jersey officer spotted a gray seal in a central New Jersey creek.

Sayreville police posted a video on Facebook on Friday of the seal apparently feeding in Morgan Creek.

Bob Schoelkopf of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine told The Home News Tribune the seal seems to be the same one spotted in South New Jersey. Schoelkopf said the seal seems to be heading north.

“He looks fine,” Schoelkopf told the paper.

Schoelkopf urged people to leave the seal alone and to look at it from a distance because seals do bite.

Sayreville police echoed those sentiments on its Facebook post:

"While beautiful, wildlife should be viewed from a safe distance [thus the root of the word...wild] and should not be fed human food."
