More Snow, Then Warmup This Week

Temperatures will be in the 50s on Friday and Saturday. Focus on that first, soak it in and bask in it. It’ll help you cope with what you’re about to read next. Okay, ready? Here it goes. Before that happens we’re in for more snow. Now step away from your computer or cellphone, scream out in anger and release all that frustration. After you get it all out, come back to this article.

Feel better? Good. Now here’s what you need to know. Be careful walking and driving today and Monday. Temperatures dropped below freezing overnight, turning the snow and rain that fell on Saturday into ice, leading to slippery conditions on roads and sidewalks.

The slick conditions created problems for several drivers Sunday morning who had trouble getting out of their driveways. It also led to speed restrictions throughout the area and the closure of a pedestrian walkway on the Ben Franklin Bridge.

Unfortunately we won’t see much melting over the next few days. We’re in for a high around freezing on Monday as well as wind chills in the teens due to a cold blast and breezy winds. A “disturbance” from the west is also coming into our area today that could bring some isolated flurries to parts of Lancaster, Harrisburg and Dover, Del. There will be little to no accumulation in those spots.

Monday morning, drivers will be in for another slippery commute as the cold temperatures will cause the icy spots to remain.

Another round of snow will then move towards our area late Monday into Tuesday morning. The system will move into the region on Tuesday around 4 a.m. before becoming widespread by 11 a.m. The information is preliminary at this point but according to NBC10 First Alert Meteorologist Tedd Florendo, it should bring in 1 to 2 inches of snow in Philadelphia and 2 to 4 inches of snow to the North and West suburbs.

The system will move out by 6 p.m. giving way to what we’ve all been waiting for, the warmup.

“A pattern change will bring in warmer air which will take us into the 50’s towards the end of the work week,” Florendo said.

Temperatures will be in the mid to late 40s on Wednesday and Thursday before rising to the 50’s on Friday and Saturday.

The warmup will lead to widespread melting, a relief to many but also a hazard as well, as the melt off could cause flooding in certain areas. We’ll have more information on potential flooding as the week progresses.

So bundle up and grit your teeth the next few days. And as you endure another brutal punch from Old Man Winter, take solace in the fact that warmer days are just around the corner.
