Mom and Daughter Dispute Chihuahua Custody

A mother and daughter are taking their dog custody woes to court – a dispute with 2,500 miles between the two parties.

Jackeline Biddle Shuler claimed her mom promised her custody of the chihuahua, named Bobby, after she offered to adopt and relocate the dog from her mother's Puerto Rico home, where the pet lived in unhealthy conditions.

"When I went to pick her up at the airport, she handed me the carrying case and said 'Here's your dog,'" said Shuler, who added she already spent more than $700 on food and vet appointments for the chihauhua.

But Shuler’s mom, Isabel Cotto, is taking her to court, alleging her daughter committed a crime – dog theft.

Shuler disagrees with her mother's assertion, and text messages and voicemails from Cotto refer to Bobby as the daughter's pet, according to an attorney for Shuler.

Cotto filed a complaint in Long Branch, New Jersey in July.

The next trial date is scheduled Nov. 10 in Long Branch, where Shuler serves as a councilwoman.
