A defense attorney has filed court documents indicating that a mental infirmity defense may be raised on behalf of a southeastern Pennsylvania man charged in the stabbing death of his wife last year.
The (Pottstown) Mercury reports that attorney John McMahon Jr. filed papers in Montgomery County Court notifying prosecutors and the judge that "the nature, extent and duration" of 37-year-old Walid Mitwalli's alleged infirmity is still unclear to the defense.
The Hatfield Township resident is charged with first- and third-degree murder in the June 2013 slaying of his 30-year-old wife Mona. He pleaded not guilty in December.
Authorities said the victim was stabbed more than a dozen times while the couple's twin 5-year-old daughters slept upstairs.
McMahon previously said his client would argue self-defense.
