Memorial Service Held for Drexel Grad Killed in Smoky DC Metro Tunnel

Family and friends honored the life of a Drexel University graduate who was killed after an electrical malfunction filled a DC Metro tunnel with smoke.

A memorial service for Carol Glover was held Monday morning at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Northeast D.C.

Glover, a graduate of Philadelphia's Drexel University and a resident of Alexandria, Virginia, was on a Virginia-bound Yellow Line train when it stopped about 800 feet beyond the platform at L'Enfant station due to electrical arcing from the high-voltage third rail.

Arcing occurs when electricity from the third rail comes into contact with another substance that conducts electricity, such as water. There was water in the tunnel, but Michael Flanigon, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said the cause of the arcing was not yet known.

The incident sent nearly 70 other people to the hospital.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Glover's death accidental by acute respiratory failure from smoke exposure.

Glover, 61, was a mother of two sons and a grandmother to three grandchildren. She was a graduate of Eastern High School in D.C. and of Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Friends and strangers have stepped in to help the Glover Family during this difficult time.  A fundraiser, on gofundme.com, has raised over $18,000. The fundraising goal had been to raise $10,000 for funeral costs and other expenses for Glover's family.
