Memorial Service for Former Governor

Service to be held for '60s-era Pa. Gov. Scranton

A memorial service for former Pennsylvania Gov. and Republican presidential candidate William Warren Scranton will be held today in the northeastern Pennsylvania city named after his family.

Mourners will gather in Covenant Presbyterian Church to pay respects to Scranton, who was elected as Pennsylvania's 38th governor in 1962 and served a single term. He died last month at age 96.

Gov. Tom Corbett's office said that the service will be held starting at 10:30 a.m. at church on Madison Avenue. It'll be open to the public.

Scranton also served one term in Congress. He lost the GOP presidential nomination in 1964 as a liberal alternative to conservative Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater.

Scranton was appointed United Nations ambassador in 1976 by President Gerald Ford and served about 10 months in the post.

Scranton and his wife had four children. Their eldest son, Bill Scranton, is a former lieutenant governor and two-time gubernatorial candidate.
