Meat Clever-Wielding Man Shot by Police Dies

Police try to tase man, but it has no effect

Philadelphia Police were forced to shoot a man who lunged at them with a meat cleaver. He later died.

The unidentified 53-year-old man was visiting a friend along the 1200-block of W. Howard Street around 4 p.m. Friday when he became enraged, police say. The homeowner fled the house and called for help.

When police arrived, they tried to negotiate with the man to bring him peacefully into custody, but those efforts proved futile.

At one point an officer used a Taser to subdue the man, but it only made him more violent, police say.

He eventually announced that he wasn't planning to go to jail or the hospital before charging at police. The officers opened fire hitting the man in the chest and arm.

He was rushed to Temple University Hospital and later died.

Investigators are unclear what caused the man to become enraged or if he was using illegal substances.
