Manhole Explodes in University City

Manhole blast causes electrical outages in the area

Extreme heat caused a manhole explosion early Wednesday afternoon in University City.

The explosion happened at 38th and Powelton at about 12:15 p.m.

Though Mark Kaplan with the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania says the hospital at 36th and Spruce and its medical buildings around 36th and Market are fine and have had no power outages from the blast, PECO officials say it did cause some outages in the area.

PECO crews were enroute to fix the outages at about 12:30 p.m., officials said.
