Manhole Covers Blowin' Up in Atlantic City

Officials investigating what could blow off a 100-pound metal lids

As if out of some cartoon scenario, manhole covers have been blowing sky-high (or at least sidewalk-high) in Atlantic City.

For two consecutive nights, the heavy metal lids have burst out of the ground because of some kind of explosion below the streets, city officials say.

Firefighters found two covers blown out of the ground -- one of them was still smoking -- on Atlantic Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard at about 10:30 p.m. Monday night.

Sunday night’s manhole cover explosion happened near California Avenue, reports the Press of Atlantic City.

No one was injured, but officials are investigating what could cause the 100-pound cast iron covers to blow off with such force.

The manholes contained electrical equipment, officials say.
