Cardinals Fan Killer Pleads Guilty

Genovese originally said he wasn't a drinker

The Philadelphia teen who ran down two tourists, killing a St. Louis woman, outside of Citizen’s Bank Park in 2008, pleaded guilty Tuesday.

Joseph Genovese, Jr. pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, and homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, according to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.

Genovese, who was 19-years-old at the time, ran a red light while driving drunk July 10, 2008 and crashed into 53-year-old Cindy Grassi and 36-year-old Sandra Wacker while they were crossing the street after a Phillies-Cardinals game.

Wacker was severely injured and Grassi died of her injuries. Both were visiting Philadelphia from St. Louis and had just attended the baseball game.

Genovese told CBS 3 back in 2008 that he was not a drinker at all and he had not been drinking at the time of the accident, and he did not run the red light.

His statement became questionable when Genovese’ MySpace page at the time revealed photos of him drinking beer, smoking what appears to be marijuana, as well as a photo of a speedometer going at a high rate of speed.

Genovese faces a maximum of 13-and-a-half to 27 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced April 13.
