Police Shoot Man in the Head During Traffic Stop

Philadelphia Police officers opened fire on a man during a traffic stop in the city's Kingsessing section last night and it's possible the man mistook the officers for possible robbers.

Police say two officers responding to a report of gunshots shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 51st Street and Willows Avenue saw a man walking down the street and tried to stop him.

Police say the man fled to a car and put it in reverse, and the officers then fired because they feared for their safety.

A witness told NBC10 the responding officers surrounded the vehicle with their guns drawn. T

Investigators say the officers opened fire, striking the man at least once.

The unidentified man was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he remained in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his head, according to police.

No officers were injured during the shooting.

Reports said that the man was possibly a pizza deliveryman and that he was afraid he was being robbed when he jumped into his car.

Police didn't confirm those details.

Bullet holes were visible next to the gas tank and on the rear passenger door and the windows were busted out on the Ford Taurus the man was driving at the time of the incident..
