Man Sentenced in Plot to Murder Wife, Daughter

A southern New Jersey man is headed to prison for trying to have his wife and daughter killed after his wife refused to post his bail following a drunken driving arrest.

Ocean County prosecutors announced Monday that 55-year-old Philip Florio of Beachwood was sentenced Friday to a six-year state prison term.

Florio had pleaded guilty last December to conspiracy to commit murder. He's been jailed since his 2011 arrest on drunken driving charges.

Prosecutors say that the plot came about while Florio was in the county jail. They say it was spurred by several reasons, including Florio's anger that his wife would not post his bail.

The plan was foiled when he conspired with an undercover officer he believed to be a hit man.
