Man Sentenced for Leading Police on Long Pursuit

A northern New Jersey man who led police on a vehicle chase along a major highway has been sentenced to 18 years in state prison.

Union County prosecutors say 34-year-old Dion Cromwell, of Irvington, must serve at least six years before he becomes eligible for parole under the sentence imposed Friday. He was convicted last month on eluding and resisting arrest charges.

Prosecutors say the January 2013 incident began when Cromwell wouldn't stop for Elizabeth police officers on Routes 1 & 9. They say Cromwell continued driving after he struck a metal guardrail, causing his car to spin around.

When the officers got out of their car and approached his vehicle, Cromwell sped toward one them before veering off and driving away, with pieces of his car falling off.
