Man Run Over by Car He Was Pushing Up Manayunk Wall

A 20-year-old was run over by the car he was pushing up a hill at 4 a.m.

A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after being run over by a car he was pushing up a steep hill in Manayunk.

The man was pushing a 1996 Volvo Sedan, with his girlfriend in the driver’s seat, up the extremely steep street known as the Manayunk Wall at about 4 a.m. Thursday, according to officials.

Police say the car rolled backwards and the unidentified man was dragged about 25 feet before the sedan struck a parked vehicle on the 200-block of Levering Street.

He was brought to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he was listed in extremely critical condition.

The girlfriend, 19-year-old Mary Opel, was steering the car, police say. She's facing DUI and assault charges.

Investigators say the β€œManayunk Wall,” dubbed so because the challenge it poses to bicyclists in the annual race, has a 10 percent grade at the location the man was pushing the car. This means the street increases 10 feet in elevation for 100 feet elevation increases 10 feet for every 100 feet.
