Man Killed Outside Anti-Violence Haven

Pittsburgh police have been searching for whoever fatally shot a man outside a building that a local artist and activist had established as a safe haven for children.

Police say 38-year-old Jeffrey Jackson, of Verona, was gunned down about 5:10 a.m. Sunday outside the Art House center in the city's crime-ridden Homewood neighborhood.

Vanessa German, the artist who created the center two doors away from her home, posted a despairing Facebook message after the shooting that said, "I don't know what to do. Please help us."

Jackson was shot outside the building where German encourages young children to express themselves through art in hopes of revitalizing the area. Brightly colored signs decorate the converted house, including some saying "Believe," "Love" and "Stop Shooting -- We Love You"
