A New Jersey man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for defrauding two nuns and about 50 others who pitched in to help the sisters out of at least $1.3 million.
Fifty-five-year-old Adriano Sotomayor, of Margate, N.J, was sentenced Thursday by a federal judge in Philadelphia. He had pleaded guilty to 17 counts of wire fraud in February.
Federal prosecutors contend Sotomayor falsely told a nun in Puerto Rico that she was the beneficiary of $2.1 million estate. She wired him about $255,000 for taxes and fees associated with the fake will before another nun in Pennsylvania with the Sisters of the Rosary of Fatima and other friends began sending funds on her behalf.
The scam ran from May 2009 and November 2011, when he was indicted.
