West Philly Hostage Situation Unfounded: Police

S.W.A.T. officers entered the home and found no sign of man or weapons

What was first reported to police as a hostage situation between a man, his mother and his infant child turned out to be an unfounded report related to a domestic dispute.

Philadelphia Police responded to a call of a man threatening his girlfriend with a gun inside a home along the 4000 block of Poplar Street in West Philadelphia at 3:20 p.m. Monday, authorities say.

Police told NBC Philadelphia they heard what sounded like three gunshots coming from inside the home. They were told a 31-year-old man was holding his mother and 4-month-old child at gunpoint.

Philadelphia Police S.W.A.T. officers eventually entered the home and did not find the man inside. There was no sign of weapons either, police say.

Authorities questioned the man's mother and determined there was not a hostage situation and that no one was hurt.

Philadelphia Police are now considering the case a domestic situation. The Southwest Detective division is investigating further.
