Man Hit While Rushing After Toddler Who Ran in Traffic

Delaware State Police say two people were hit by a car when a toddler ran into traffic and the man rushed after her.
 
It happened about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday on New Castle Avenue in New Castle. Troopers say several people were standing on a median when 3-year-old Brielle Starks darted into traffic.

Police say 26-year-old Todd Smith immediately ran after the child.
 
Brielle and Smith were struck by a car driven by 29-year-old Matthew Pierce, of Elkton, Md.
 
Brielle was flown to A.I. duPont Hospital, where she was treated for injuries to her torso. Smith was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he was treated for arm and leg injuries.
 
No citations have been issued in the accident.
