Man Convicted of Homeless Man's Murder in Pa.

A suburban Philadelphia man convicted of stabbing a homeless man to death during a robbery last summer faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

A Bucks County jury deliberated for almost 11 hours before finding 23-year-old Jamal Smith of Bristol Township guilty of second-degree murder on Friday. Witnesses testified that he confessed to stabbing 58-year-old John Reil in the parking area of the Marion Village apartments in July 2009 and showed off the bloody murder weapon.

Smith, who is hearing-impaired, was told of the verdict by a sign language interpreter. He put his head down on the defense table and cried quietly when jurors left. Smith took the stand to deny killing Reil and said a reputed gang member was responsible.

Defense attorney John Fioravanti said his client will appeal.
