Elderly Couple Severely Beaten in Home by Man Asking for Directions

Officials say the attacker left the couple's home with only $188.

A violent attack on an elderly Camden County couple has a small town reeling and police say the man responsible was caught on surveillance video driving a Mitsubishi Lancer moments before the attack.

Berlin Borough Police tell NBC Philadelphia that in September, the suspect knocked on the door of the elderly couple’s home on Florence Avenue, asking for directions.

He then pulled a ski mask over his face and forced his way into the home, before pulling out a gun, Chief Bob Carrara tells NBC Philly.

Police say that once inside, the man pulled the blinds and beat an 84-year-old woman. He pistol-whipped the woman’s 81-year-old husband when he tried to save her.

The suspect nabbed the woman as she tried to run, according to police.

“He grabs her by the neck, slams her into the railing and drags her back to the house,” Carrara said.

He tied up the victims before leaving the home with just $188.

Now, police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the man driving this black Mitsubishi Lancer with New Jersey plates and silver rims just minutes he attacked the couple.

The suspect is described as a black male, 25 to 35 years old. He's 5-feet-7-inches and weighs between 180 to 200-pounds. He was last seen wearing a grey sweatshirt and dark baggy panys, gloves and a ski mask.

The victims are recovering from injuries sustained in the attack. The woman had a heart attack and her husband suffered a brain injury.

“Why do you have to beat ‘em up? Why do you have to thump them? Take them to the near point of their life?” asks one horrified neighbor.
