Man Assaults Mother, Threatens Police: Cops

Police say they spent hours trying to contact an armed man who assaulted his mother and then threatened to kill himself as well as other police officers.

A Haverford man is in custody after police say he assaulted his mother, threatened to kill himself then threatened to kill officers who arrived at the scene.

Police responded to a home on the unit block of West Hillcrest Avenue at 2:39 p.m. When they arrived they spoke with a woman who claimed that her son, Christopher Mobley, 36, physically assaulted her and was alone inside the house, according to investigators.

Officers entered the home and say they found Mobley crouching on the first landing of the stairs, pointing a handgun at them. Mobley then walked down the stairs and pointed the gun at his own chin, according to police. Police say they ordered Mobley to drop the gun and used a taser on him when he did not comply.

Mobley then allegedly ran to the second floor of the home where he pointed the gun through a second floor window and threatened to kill the officers. Police evacuated residents in the area and secured the perimeter of the scene.

The Haverford Township Police Special Response Team and a Crisis Negotiation Team were notified and arrived at the scene. Investigators say they spent several hours trying to contact Mobley by phone but were unsuccessful. The Special Response Team finally made their way inside the home where they say they found Mobley hiding under the basement stairs with the gun. He was arrested and transported to the Haverford Township Police Department.

Mobley is currently awaiting an arraignment hearing on the charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and other related offenses.
