Man Assaults Cop While Holding Pot: Police

Police say Lamar Pearsall, 22, assaulted a police officer while in possession of marijuana.

Police arrested a New Castle man after he allegedly assaulted an officer while in possession of marijuana.

It happened on Thursday when a patrolling officer spotted Lamar Pearsall, 22, walking on Moores Lane near 14th Street. Police say Pearsall matched the description of a suspect involved in a robbery moments earlier on Landers Lane.

The officer stopped Pearsall who repeatedly ignored his commands to stop reaching into his pockets, according to investigators. Police say the officer then attempted to take Pearsall into custody leading to a struggle between the two in which the officer was struck several times. More officers then arrived at the scene and helped arrest Pearsall. Both Pearsall and the officer were treated at the Christiana Emergency Room for minor injuries.

Police claim they recovered around 109 grams of marijuana, zip lock baggies and a digital scale from Pearsall. He is charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana, assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Pearsall was committed to the Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $29,970 secured bond pending a preliminary hearing.
