Man Accused of Holding Family Hostage, Setting House on Fire

A man is in custody after police say he held his wife and son hostage and then set his own house on fire.

Police say the man, who has not yet been identified, began arguing with his wife inside their home on the 300 block of South 62nd Street around 10 a.m. on Monday. The man then allegedly became so enraged that he took out a knife and threatened both his wife and son.

Police were called to the scene. When they arrived, they say the man refused to leave the home and threatened to kill anyone who came inside.

Police say the first responders were eventually able to convince the man to release his wife and son. After letting them go however, the man refused to surrender himself, according to investigators.

As they waited for the SWAT team, police say the suspect doused his home with lighter fluid and set it on fire. Firefighters were quickly able to put it out however.

Police were eventually able to apprehend the man and he was placed into custody. Officials say he suffered minor injuries though his wife and son were not harmed.

Police have not yet revealed the man’s identity or the specific charges against him.
