Mail Carrier Used Route to Aid in Stealing $390K: Police

Authorities in New Jersey have sentenced a U.S. Postal Service carrier to prison time for using his mail route to aid in a fraud scheme.

New Jersey's Attorney General says Miguel Duran used his mail route to aid a group of Paterson men who stole more than $390,000 by filing 151 fraudulent state and federal tax returns.

The 35-year-old Paterson resident was sentenced Friday to three years in state prison. Duran pleaded guilty to a theft charge and admitted to using his Morris County mail route to aid in the scheme.

Duran also admitted to intercepting government refund checks while working his mail route and delivering the checks to his co-conspirators. He was paid $200 for each check.

Duran has also been ordered to pay $29,800 in restitution.
