Fire Breaks Out at NJ Apartment Complex

Police officer injured in 2-alarm blaze at Lindenwold apartments

Flames and dark smoke could be seen shooting into the air Friday morning as an apartment complex burned in Camden County.

Flames broke out just before 7:30 a.m. at the 100 building at Stonington Court Apartments at 1800 Laurel Road in Lindenwold, N.J.

The fire quickly spread to two alarms as thick smoke continued to plume out of the apartments.

The blaze left a police officer suffering from smoke inhalation injuries, according to Lindenwold firefighters on the scene.

That officer is expected to be OK, the fire chief said.

Sixteen of the 24 units in the building were damaged - some gutted nearly entirely, fire officials said.

Throughout the day, hot spots were doused especially near where investigators believe the inferno began.

All residents were accounted for and were allowed to gather anything salvageable, according to authorities.

It took about a couple hours to bring the fire under control.

The Red Cross is assisting dozens who say they have lost everything.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
