Korean Drink Leads Push for BYOB Law Change

Restaurants in northern New Jersey that don't have liquor licenses are pressing to change the rules so their customers can bring a popular Korean alcoholic beverage with them.

But restaurants that have licenses are fighting the BYOBs, saying they paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to serve soju and other drinks.

The distilled liquor is popular with residents in Korean enclaves in Bergen County.

Assemblyman Gordon Johnson tells The Record newspaper he's asked the Office of Legislative Services to draft a bill to change the BYOB law that allows patrons to bring wine and beer to restaurants to include soju.

Johnson also says he plans to meet with liquor license holders and BYOB owners to try to broker an agreement.
