Kiln Sparks Fire, Closes School

A fire apparently caused by a hot oven has forced the temporary closure of a central Pennsylvania school.

Authorities say flames broke out Monday evening in a wing of Wheatland Middle School in Lancaster. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters traced the cause to a kiln in a utility closet between two art rooms. They say it appears that heat from the oven ignited nearby materials.

Fire Lt. Greg Leaman says the flames burned themselves out, but heavy smoke traveled through half the school.

The building will be closed Tuesday. A school district spokeswoman says classes are expected to resume on Wednesday.
