Suspect Stabs K-9 Officer to Death: Police

Pennsylvania authorities say a 5-year-old German shepherd and K-9 officer for the Port Authority of Allegheny County was stabbed to death and the suspect was shot during a foot pursuit on a transit busway.

Port Authority spokesman Jim Ritchie says the dog, named Aren, had been in service with the Port Authority for about four years.

Ritchie says the pursuit Sunday began at a transit station in Wilkinsburg, outside Pittsburgh. He says officers chased the suspect along the transit busway that leads from downtown Pittsburgh into the city's eastern suburbs.

During the pursuit, Ritchie says, the suspect stabbed the dog and the animal died.

Ritchie says officers shot the suspect but he didn't know yet what the suspect's condition was. He also didn't know what prompted the pursuit.
