Jury Selection Begins in Trial of Alleged Cop Killer

Jury selection is scheduled to begin for a man accused of killing a Philadelphia police officer in a shootout allegedly prompted by a taxicab robbery.

Lawyers will begin picking a jury Monday in the trial of 35-year-old Rasheed Scrugs. Prosecutors say Scrugs fatally shot 25-year-old Officer John Pawlowski in February 2009 in the city's Logan neighborhood.

Police say Scrugs shot Pawlowski after officers responded to a 911 call from a cab driver who said Scrugs threatened him. Witnesses say Scrugs threatened to kill the cabbie and police officers if the driver alerted authorities.

Pawlowski was the last of seven officers killed in the line of duty during a 3-year period starting in May 2006.

Scrugs is charged with first-degree murder. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
