Jury Selection Underway in Sandusky Sex Abuse Case

If an impartial jury can't be selected from the pool of 200 locals, one will be brought in from another county, Judge John Cleland said in court.

Jury Selection for Jerry Sandusky's child molestation trial is underway in a Bellefonte, Pa. courtroom Tuesday morning.

NBC10's LuAnn Cahn says that former Penn State assistant football coach and his attorney Joseph Amendola arrived at court just after 8 a.m. walking silently past a mass of local and national media.

Of that mass, only five pool reporters will be allowed inside the courtroom during jury selection due to the small size of the room and the large number of prospective jurors.

Judge John Cleland has addressed those 200 jurors -- pulled from the local community as per Sandusky's request -- and they are now being taken into the courtroom in groups of 40 for questions and answers.

Cleland said in court that if a fair and impartial jury can not be selected from this jury pool, a jury will be brought in from another county.

On Monday, Cleland denied Sandusky's last ditch effort to delay the trial last week. He also made the decision not to allow reporters to tweet or email from inside the courtroom.

68-year-old Sandusky is charged with molesting and sexually assaulting 10 young boys he met during his coaching stint at Penn State as well as through his now defunct charity 2nd Mile.

Sandusky vehemently denies the charges.
