Judge in Abortion Doc, Priest-Abuse Cases Retires

Renee Cardwell Hughes has submitted a resignation letter

A Philadelphia judge is leaving the bench after overseeing some of the city's biggest cases of the past two years.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Renee Cardwell Hughes has submitted a resignation letter.

Hughes supervised the grand juries that issued reports about a deadly abortion clinic and a priest-abuse case involving a Roman Catholic church official, three other priests and a teacher.

She also presided over the recent murder trials of three police killers.

The 55-year-old Hughes is in the midst of her second 10-year term on the Court of Common Pleas.

President Judge Pamela Pryor Dembe confirms that she has received Hughes' resignation letter.

Hughes did not immediately return a message left in her chambers.
