Penn State Student Dies, Other Teen Hurt Hiking in Poconos

Police have identified two teenage hikers who fell from atop a waterfall in northeastern Pennsylvania, killing one and leaving the other in critical condition.

Police say 18-year-old Rahman Mustafa Hassan had been sitting next to 19-year-old Fadi Abboud on a rock at the top of a waterfall Wednesday afternoon about 35 miles south of Scranton in Lehigh Gorge State Park.

Police say both teens fell about 50 feet to the base of the waterfall when they tried to pick up a falling water bottle.

Police say Hassan, of Nazareth, slammed into rocks at the base of the falls and immediately died.

Abboud, of Allentown, has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Both attended Penn State Lehigh Valley. The university says counselors will be available to students on Thursday.
