Jersey Shore Town Approved for Federal Sandy Grant

If the money had not come through, Toms River would have seen a 30 to 40 percent tax increase.

Gov. Chris Christie has announced a federal grant that will help another Jersey Shore town rebuild after Superstorm Sandy.

Christie says Toms River is receiving a $28 million essential services grant.

The money covers the cost of a shifting property tax burden that resulted from the storm. It will keep the town from making service cuts and increasing property taxes like many had feared.

If the money had not come through, Toms River would have seen a 30 to 40 percent tax increase.

More than $44 million has been allotted to 11 municipalities under the program, part of a $60 billion federal relief package.

Christie says the future is uncertain for towns that are still rebuilding beyond next year, but he continues to seek more aid.
