Inmate Escapes Prison, Steals Car

Berks County inmate makes a prison escape by stealing a car. He's still on the loose.

Police are searching for a Berks County prisoner they say drove away from the Wernersville Correctional Facility in a stolen car.

Jesus Manuel Gonzalez, 29, was supposed to be transferred Monday from the South Heidelberg jail for violating his parole by possessing contraband at the facility.

Investigators say that while waiting for state parole officers to pick him up, Gonzalez fled the building and jumped into a 1993 red Chevrolet Geo Metro. Gonzalez stole a car from the facility and successfully escaped the area.

Gonzalez was still on the loose Tuesday morning. He has a criminal history including burglary and receiving stolen property.

Anyone with information on Gonzalez’s whereabouts should call Pennsylvania State Police in Reading 610.378.4011.
